Born in the heart of London’s east end, Wan-Cee (pronounced “one-see”) grew up in Tottenham North London. Although he was always enchanted by music, it was a community service sentence in 1992 that brought about his first musical experience. After a judge ordered him to attend a government youth offending rehabilitation project, he spent many worthwhile hours working in a studio in North London where he eventually made his first recording.
In 1995 Wan-Cee returned to music after an acquaintance introduced him to drum and bass producer Shy FX, this lead to Wan-Cee writing, co-producing and performing the intro to the hugely successful Gangsta pt 3. At the time Shy FX was signed to South London based SOUR Records. “Shy FX gave me my first cheque in this business, he was the first person to pay me for making music. That’s when I new what I wanted to do!”
In 1997, After another break from the business Wan-Cee returned to recording with UK Hip-Hop veteran CANE @ the Man On a Mission Studios Tottenham North London. Frequent visitors were the likes of Fallacy and Skinny Man to name a few.
“We used the studio as a place to just hang out, chill, do business, other times we’d record till early hours of the morning!”
When CANE was imprisoned in 1999, Wan-Cee took another hiatus from music only to return in 2002 with the UK Underground classic “Grey Skies” produced with music legend DON LUCHI (a veteran with more than 20yrs experience) this record was Wan-Cee debut single, which earned him the coveted spot of single of the month in UK’s HIP-HOP CONNECTION (HHC) “Luchi taught me how to record my vocal properly, I knew how I wanted to sound, and he helped me achieve it, once you’ve worked with him you come away with no doubts that the guy’s a genius.”
Having received critical acclaim for his first release on his own label imprint PRODIGAL SON ENTERTAINMENT Wan-Cee returned in 2005 merging with UK HIP-HOP power house KEMET ENTERTAINMENT for his sophomore release, the double A side single “Remembrance/Make Sum Noise” this also received rave reviews And mass radio spins nationwide again earning him single of the month in HHC fro the second time in a row. Three times lucky? This impressive double A side effort was produced by FUSION and THA FORCE respectively and were accompanied by two equally pioneering and groundbreaking videos, both of Wan-Cee directed himself.
